How Does Red Light Therapy Work?

In summary, red and near-infrared light charges our cellular batteries, which provide energy for the body's function.

Mitochondria, known as the "powerhouses" of our cells, are responsible for producing adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy source for all cellular processes. Red and near-infrared light therapy works by emitting specific wavelengths of light (610-1400 nm) that penetrate the skin and deeper tissues. It is these exact wavelengths that are absorbed by chromophores, primarily Cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria, stimulating ATP production and enhancing cellular energy.

Red light (610-760 nm) penetrates up to 2.5 cm into the skin, while near-infrared light (760-1400 nm) reaches deeper into muscles, bones, organs, and even the brain. By dissociating nitric oxide from Cytochrome c oxidase, red light therapy allows the mitochondria to resume efficient ATP production, boosting energy and activating antioxidant and anti-inflammatory processes.

MITO LIGHT® devices provide a concentrated dose of these beneficial wavelengths without harmful UV radiation, effectively "recharging" your cellular batteries, much like spending hours in the sun. This therapy can help counteract the effects of indoor lifestyles, restoring energy levels and promoting overall well-being although it should not be used as a replacement for normal sun exposure.

Benefits

As confirmed in over 5000 scientific studies, there are numerous benefits to red light therapy:

Longevity & Vitality: Red light therapy supports cellular vitality and anti-ageing by enhancing mitochondrial function, which improves cell longevity and overall health. Consistent use can slow ageing and maintain long-term vitality.

Recovery & Athletic Performance: Red light therapy is widely used before workouts to boost performance and after to reduce inflammation, speed recovery, and enhance muscle strength and mass. It promotes mitochondrial energy production, boosts collagen, and can increase testosterone (when applied to specific areas), supporting physical health.

Hormonal System: Near-infrared light penetrates deeply, stimulating various endocrine glands, particularly the thyroid, with positive effects seen in women especially after 10–15 minutes of daily neck exposure. Red light therapy also improves testosterone production and sperm quality in men when applied to the genital area.

Skin, Hair & Nails: As collagen production decreases with age, red and near-infrared light stimulate its synthesis, essential for reducing wrinkles and improving hair and nail quality. This is a key reason red light therapy is used in dermatology and beauty treatments.

Sleep & Circadian Rhythm: Red light therapy helps reset the circadian rhythm when used in the morning, mimicking natural sunlight. Studies show it improves sleep quality and melatonin levels, aiding in energy and performance throughout the day.

Musculoskeletal System: Red and near-infrared light therapy benefits joints, tendons, and bones by reducing inflammation and promoting collagen synthesis, vital for musculoskeletal health and injury prevention.

Mental & Cognitive Function: Red light therapy positively impacts brain function, mood, and mental health, helping with depression, seasonal affective disorder, and cognitive performance by enhancing neurotransmitter synthesis and counteracting stress.

Reduction of Inflammation: Red and near-infrared light therapy reduces inflammation, whether from swelling, muscle strain, or chronic joint conditions, by directly targeting affected areas.

Eyesight: Contrary to popular belief, red and near-infrared light therapy can strengthen eyesight, counteracting the effects of excessive screen time and blue light exposure. It safely stimulates the eyes, even at high intensities.

Experience these scientifically-backed benefits with our advanced red light therapy panels, designed to bring the healing power of red light into your daily wellness routine.

Are MITO LIGHT® red light devices safe?
Their safety is guaranteed by the CE and RoHS certifications that our products have. The LED technology using red and near-infrared light is safe, as evidenced by thousands of scientific studies. Our devices do not emit any potentially harmful UV radiation or excessive heat.

How do I set-up the product?

What time of day can I use red light therapy?
Red light therapy can be used at any time during the day. The most common time is in the morning, but you can also use it before or after your workout. You can also use the MITO LIGHT® in the evening but make sure that the red light isn’t directed at your eyes (even if they’re closed) approximately 2 to 3 hours before bedtime, or make sure to use only the invisible NIR spectrum.

Is it possible to perform multiple therapy sessions in one day?
Red light therapy can be used several times a day. If the same body part is repeatedly illuminated, we recommend a maximum of 30 minutes per day. This period of time should be divided into 2 or 3 therapy sessions.

Does it make sense to use red light therapy in the summertime?
There are a lot of uses and benefits of red light therapy also during summertime.
Red light therapy is famous for its positive effect on sex hormones. Both men and women can get the best results by illuminating the crotch - that’s where most of the sex hormones are created. At the same time, however, it is not desirable to expose your intimate parts to sunlight due to the potentially negative effect of UV radiation and excessive heating of these parts.
One of the less known but important benefits of using red light therapy in the morning is that red and near-infrared light essentially prepares the skin for UV radiation, which is emitted by the sun and compensates for its potentially negative effect. This way, the skin becomes more resistant to sunburn.
The targeted use for sports recovery and improving performance are more ways to benefit from red light therapy. This includes muscle recovery, recovery of joints, ligaments, tendons, and other connective tissues. This kind of therapy can be used to accelerate the recovery of the mentioned tissues and speed up the healing of possible injuries.

Can I overdose on light?
In photobiomodulation, there is something called "biphasic dose response". This means that too low a dose of light does not have enough effect, the ideal dose has the maximum effect, and too high a dose loses the positive effect again. We therefore recommend that you follow our recommendations: a distance of approx. 15 - 50 cm per illuminated area for 10 - 20 minutes.

Can I look into the light or should my eyes be closed?
Always keep your eyes closed during use. For a positive effect on the eyes and vision, you can keep your eyes closed as the light will penetrate through the eyelids. However, some people are more sensitive to light of strong intensity and find it uncomfortable even with their eyes closed. For these purposes, we put protective goggles in the package. Consult your doctor about the need for protective glasses.

Do red light devices radiate heat?
The near-infrared light radiates mild, pleasant heat.

What is the difference between the RED spectrum and the NIR one?
The red (RED) spectrum is absorbed more superficially, mostly through the skin or hair. This makes it very effective in giving you a healthy and youthful appearance.
The near-infrared spectrum (NIR) can penetrate the subcutaneous tissue to a depth of several centimeters. It reaches various organs, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments or even the brain.
Both wavelengths are most often used together as they work synergistically. However, it’s also possible to use them separately. During evening therapy sessions, it's better to go with the NIR invisible spectrum, which doesn't have a stimulating effect.

What is the difference between MITO LIGHT® red light devices and an infrared sauna?
An infrared sauna contains a different spectrum of wavelengths, mainly generating a lot of heat, which is also its main effect. Infrared saunas mostly use wavelengths ranging from the mid and far-infrared spectrum (IR-B) to the far-infrared spectrum (IR-C). These spectra don't go so deep into the body. IR-B penetrates the top layer of the skin, and IR-C heats the skin's surface.
MITO LIGHT® red light devices, on the other hand, emit red and near-infrared wavelengths (IR-A) of highly concentrated intensity. The red spectrum is mainly absorbed by the skin and is essential for healthy and youthful skin. The near-infrared spectrum (IR-A) has a unique ability to penetrate the subcutaneous tissue to a depth of several centimetres. Both of these wavelengths are absorbed in the mitochondria. As a result, mitochondria are more efficient at producing energy in the form of ATP, which the body then uses for all its vital functions.

Do red light devices increase the amount of vitamin D in the body?
Vitamin D is synthesized in the body through the use of UV radiation, which our devices don't emit. Thus, there is no increase in vitamin D.

Why are half of the LEDs off?
These in fact emit the invisible near-infrared light. Our eyes can't see it - similar to UV light, which is at the opposite end of the visible spectrum.

What is the difference between 30-degree and 60-degree beam angles?
We choose a 30-degree beam angle for our devices to optimize the delivery of high irradiance over longer distances. Wider beam angles tend to dissipate light more rapidly as the distance from the source increases, leading to less effective therapy. In contrast, a 30-degree angle concentrates the light more sharply, maintaining its power even at greater distances. This focused approach ensures that more energy reaches the targeted area, enhancing the therapeutic effects of the treatment. By minimizing light dispersion, this narrower beam angle ensures that less energy is wasted and more is precisely directed to where it's most needed, maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of our red light therapy.

Can red light therapy be used during pregnancy?
Red light therapy can also be used during pregnancy (after consulting with your doctor). When illuminating the abdomen, we recommend a bigger distance from the panel when using the NIR spectrum (at least 30 to 50 centimeters) due to the produced heat.
Dr. Michael Hamblin, a professor at Harvard Medical School and one of the world's leading scientists in light therapy, believes that RED/NIR therapy can be very beneficial to both the mother and the baby during pregnancy due to the prevalence of stem cells.

What is the lifespan of MITO LIGHT® devices?
Thanks to the fact that our panels pride themselves on high-quality LED technology, their lifespan is excellent: up to 50,000 hours. The recommended 30 minutes a day takes the lifespan to up to 274 years.
